Motherhood, Lactation and Me

Motherhood is the toughest job in the world.  What other job has you on 24 hour duty with little to no training and the immensely important responsibility of raising and caring for a helpless and utterly dependent child.  Nothing can truly prepare one for the sleep deprevation, hard work and responsibility of motherhood.  But, with an experienced helper and a little education, we can make the transition easier.

In the crucial days and weeks after I had my first child I was lost.  My son wasn't latching on properly and I was in terrible pain.  I didn't know who to ask for help.  Luckily, I was directed to a La Leche League meeting.  A short lesson in positioning later, my baby was nursing contently at my breast.  To this day, I am greatful that I was able to find an experienced and caring mom to teach me about this important part of motherhood.  But I knew that my happy ending didn't happen for everyone.  How many other mothers gave up because they lacked proper support and a source of up-to-date information?  I decided that I wanted to learn all that I could about breastfeeding and infant care so that I could teach this valuable knowledge to others.

Since then, my passion for teaching mothers to breastfeed has grown into a career.  I started out volunteering as a breastfeeding peer-counsleor with WIC and eventually completed my training to become a La Leche League Leader.  My desire to teach and support mothers then lead me to CAPPA (the Childbirth And Postpartum Professional Association) where I studied and trained to become a Certified Lactation Educator.  Now, in addition to teaching private breastfeeding classes, I am also a CLE Trainer with CAPPA. 

There is a huge demand for breastfeeding support and education right now.  So, what better time to start your career as a Certified Lactation Educator?
